Labor Group Responds to SEIU Slander
Alliance for Worker Freedom Willing to Set the Record Straight
Washington, DC – Today, the Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF), an organization committed to protecting worker freedom and advocating union financial accountability and transparency, responds to recent slander and attacks by the Service Employees International Union.
In the January 12, 2008th edition of the Chattanooga Times, in a story titled Group Critical of SEIU Remarks, Mark Naccarto, SEIU Local 205 spokesperson said, “The Alliance for Worker Freedom looks to be an anti-union think tank…I don’t put much faith in what they say.”
In response to this comment, Brian Johnson, Director of Policy released the following statement:
“Our group is dedicated to the protection of worker’s rights – it should not be surprising that the SEIU associates workers’ rights and freedoms with being ‘anti-union’. If a worker wishes to join a union, he should also have the ability to say ‘no’ to join that union; so we advocate for right to work laws. Union members should not be forced to pay dues which secretly go to political candidates which they may not even support; so we advocate for paycheck protection laws. Workers should be able to move across the nation with the confidence that the ebb and flow of the free market will determine the fair wages in each state, not forced bargaining which skews the labor market and endangers state budgets. Therefore, we advocate for individual wage and benefit negotiation.” Johnson continues, “with private sector union membership at all time historic lows, around seven percent, it is not surprising that unions are looking to strong-arm governments into contracts that will hold them prey to extortion from union bosses.”
