Rep. McMorris Rodgers Balances Work & Family Concerns with New Legislation
Family-Friendly Workplace Act is Labor Law Change to Believe In
Washington, D.C. — Today, the Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF), an organization representing millions of working Americans and businesses nation-wide, endorsed the Family-Friendly Workplace Act, H.R. 933, introduced by Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA).
This Act removes barriers that prevent many employers from providing increased flexibility to their employees who are covered by the overtime provisions of existing law. Currently, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 prohibits employers from offering workers paid time off as compensation for their overtime work. However, government and other public sector workers have long been privilege to this flexibility.
“While the Democrats claim they want ‘change’, they are simply adding more regulations and increased bureaucratic hurdles for employees and workers to jump through,” says AWF Executive Director Brian M. Johnson. “We have several laws enacted in the 1930s that continue to keep our workforce from advancing well into the 21st Century – Rep. McMorris Rodgers knows that and is committed to changing labor law for the best.”
Critical of recent legislation that placed undue burdens on businesses and hurt workers, such as the Paycheck Fairness Act of the 110th Congress, Rep. McMorris Rodgers hopes her legislation will allow more workers to “find a balance between work and family.”
“Last Congress, ‘labor reform’ was defined as bills that gave kick-backs to trial lawyers by exposing companies to legal damages based on unintended consequences of their actions. This Congress, Rep. McMorris Rodgers is defining labor reform as giving employees more choices and employers more flexibility to work with their employees. This is change that I can believe in.”
The Alliance for Worker Freedom will continue to urge members of the U.S. House of Representatives to cosponsor this important legislation. For more information, visit www.workerfreedom.org
