UAW Conference Courts Presidential Candidates

After 38 years with Sears Manufacturing, Roy Farnum knows all about candidate courting. But as he watches Sen. Hillary Clinton speak on Monday, he knows this vote will be crucial.
"Labor is, if you really think about it, the backbone of the economy," he said.
And this regional conference for the UAW could build the backbone for presidential hopefuls. Members from a four-state area are getting personal appearances from seven contenders this week.
Speaking to hundreds of loyal UAW members, Sen. Clinton says that strong unions are essential to building the middle class.
"Stand with me during the campaign, so I can stand with you during the years in the White House," Sen. Clinton said.
If party tradition continues to be important for Democrats, then earning the labor vote will provide a big boost along the campaign trail.
"The UAW has always looked to a presidential candidate that's going to help the working man go forward in this country," said Local 79 President Don Seger. "Look to protect labor laws that are going to help us."...click to continue.
