May Jobs Report: Continued Low Unemployment

On Friday, June 7, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Employment Situation Summary for May 2019. There was little change from last month.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 75,000 jobs in May. The increase was mostly in the professional and business services and in health care.

Governor Ducey and Arizona Republicans Lead the Way on Occupational Licensing

On April 10, 2019, Governor Doug Ducey (R) signed HB 2569 into law, allowing universal recognition of occupational licenses in Arizona. Arizona is the first state to recognize out-of-state licenses. 

Representative Warren Petersen (R) introduced the legislation in the House on February 4, 2019. The bill passed the House by a 36 to 24 vote on February 25th, and it passed the Senate on April 4th by 18 to 11 with one Senator not voting.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 196,000, beating expectations of 175,000 new jobs. Job gains occurred mostly in health care and in professional and technical services.
