It’s no secret that labor unions donate money to political candidates.

According to the Wall Street Journal, from January 2015 to October 2016, unions spent somewhere around $108 million on campaign activities. Approximately 85 percent of that went to Democrats.

A Charity for Unions: What is the Peggy Browning Fund?

Named after Margaret Browning, a deceased labor attorney and National Labor Relations Board member, the Peggy Browning Fund is a Philadelphia based non-profit that promotes young law students interested in labor law by providing them with fellowships in the labor field.

Most of the fellowships provided by the charity are in the legal departments of well-known unions, such as the AFL-CIO and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

This proposed legislation would morph California into a single-payer healthcare state, costing its taxpayers an estimated $400 billion every year. The current total Californian budget is only around $110 billion per year.

Free to Associate, Not Forced to Associate

The very first amendment to the United States Constitution gives Americans the right to assemble. 

There’s no appendage to this amendment declaring that that right turns into a requirement, depending on one’s field of labor or location.

But in certain regions of the United States, workers can be required to associate with a union as a condition of employment, regardless of their own desires for workplace negotiation.

And with this forced association comes forced financial obligations in the form of union dues.

It has been 11 days since Yale University graduate students who are members of UNITE HERE Local 33 decided to go on a hunger strike in front of Yale President Peter Salovey’s home. On April 25, 2017, eight members of the union went on a hunger strike to encourage Yale to negotiate with UNITE HERE.
